Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)
Your Daily Herbal: I *love* this herb; it has probably saved my marriage more than once because of it’s ability to calm and relax. One of my herbal mentors called it “Bitchwort” for it’s ability to …um…uh….how to say this….make one less bitchy? 🙂 It has been used for restlessness and hyperactivitiy in both children and adults.
Based on the above info, you can guess than that is it used for irritability, nervousness, tension, stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s also been used to help people relax so they can go to sleep. This is NOT a sedative. It will not knock you out–it simply helps you relax so you can more easily fall asleep. So if stress, worry, irritability keep you up at night, this might be worth a try.
It is also analgesic, which means that it helps with pain. Some have used it for toothaches,headaches and menstrual pain. It’s also anti-spasmodic, relaxing tightness, so it is useful for cramps, or other spastic or convulsive muscles.
I like to use the flowers and leaves as an infusion and drink it frequently. Today I mixed it with skullcap and peppermint. You can also find it in a tincture or capsules. These are usually stronger than drinking infusion and can be used at night to help promote a restful night of sleep.
